Understanding Congested Spaces
Congested spaces are areas within industrial environments filled with obstructions such as equipment, pipes, cables, and machinery. These obstacles can limit or block essential footings, mounting points, and bolting locations, making installations tricky.
Congested spaces are distinct from confined spaces.
- Confined Spaces: Areas not intended for continuous occupancy, with restricted entry and exit, presenting hazards like toxic atmospheres or entrapment. Examples include tanks and silos.
- Congested Spaces: Areas where movement is hindered by clutter, making navigation difficult and increasing safety risks. While they lack the extreme hazards of confined spaces, congested areas can still pose safety concerns.
Another Layer of Complexity: Access to Congested Areas
Sometimes, the challenge isn’t just the space itself, rather how to get to it. For example rooftops.
Many rooftops have walls separating sections, requiring crossovers or walkovers. Often, access to a rooftop is limited to a ladder and a small hatch, creating a point of congestion.
Traditional Approaches
Prefabricated: This involves lifting large fully built structures to the roof which can be costly and complicated, especially for taller buildings. These must often be moved further on the roof to the desired location.
Welding on-site: This requires transporting materials through the hatch, along with delays for permits, scheduling, and inspections. On-site welding also creates additional risks. Roof membranes require protection to prevent heat and debris damage from the welding, cutting and grinding.

Stairs, crossovers, platforms and supports, any and all solutions can be designed to fit both the space and getting there despite the congestion.
This platform was carried to the roof and out the door in pieces and assembled right there.
